Since the Middle Ages, on the hill behind the Grammar school there has been a fortress which was mentioned in a document of the 11th of January 1227. Almost nothing is left of the grandiose building except some written records, engravings and paintings. The remains of the wall which surrounded the city are preserved. Today, in place of the fortress, there is a park and a promenade built according to the plans made by Vilim Just in 1877. Since 1905. it bears the name Strossmayer, although the inhabitants of Požega still call it the Old City or just the City.
